More Than Just Cats & Dogs: Other Animals In Need of Help

Dogs and cats aren’t the only pets that need forever homes. There are rescues out there working to find families for just about every type of animal you can imagine.

If you’re ready to think outside the box and bring home a small pet or exotic animal, here are some creatures you may want to consider rescuing.

Small pets in need of adoption

When you’re looking at add a caged pet to your family, you may not think of adoption first, but there are many rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, ferrets and other small critters available from local animal shelters and breed-specific rescues.

These pets do best when kept indoors in an appropriate cage. They need attention and socialization just like other pets, but their size and ability to be contained make them ideal for smaller homes or apartments. They won’t feel cooped up the way dogs or cats might, and they still have lots of love to give

Farm animal rescue

Pigs, goats, sheep, and horses all need rescuing, too. Of course, these creatures need plenty of space to exercise and graze, but they make an excellent addition to the family if you have plenty of land and appropriate zoning.

Horses, especially, are removed from unhealthy situations on a regular basis. These animals have long lives and are very social, so it’s important for them to be adopted by people who know how to care for them properly.

Avian pets in need

Owners sometimes surrender parrots, parakeets, cockatiels, and other birds when they get to be too noisy or too much work. If you love these creatures, consider adopting a bird in need.

Parrots and cockatoos live long lives – longer than many people – and they can become beloved friends to their human companions. Rehabilitating a bird that has been abused or mistreated takes time and devotion, but rescuing one of these beautiful animals also comes with countless rewards.

Amphibian and reptile rescue

Exotic pets like snakes, turtles, lizards, and frogs also wind up in shelters or in need of homes. If you’re looking to add a unique pet to your family, make sure to check out reptile rescues first.
